The Palio is tied to the commemorative events for the Battle of Legnano; a weapons battle that saw the victory of the communities linked to the Lega Lombarda against the imperial army of Federico I of Barbarossa, which occurred 29 May 1176. The Palio's calendar includes official ceremonies and the organized initiative of the different districts and the three parts which form the organizing committee; the Comune di Legnano, Collegio dei capitani and the districts and Famiglia Legnanese. The climaxing moment occurs on the last Sunday of May, a day in which the city streets have a historic procession and a horse race between the different districts- a contest between jockeys who ride bare-back.
